We are diving head first into this month's unit and celebrating poetry in both our reader and writer workshop. In reading workshop, we will be learning about poem elements, such as stanza rhyme scheme, and figurative language, while also exploring various styles of poetry ranging from concrete, acrostic, haiku, and more. Lastly, we'll be reading poems from some of the greats, such as Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, and Shel Silverstein and using their works to analyze theme, mood, and tone and how those elements impact each work.
In writer workshop, we'll be applying our new knowledge of poetry and its elements to create our own works of art. Our goal will be writing dozens of poems by dabbling in the different styles of poetry. Our poets will work hard over the next few weeks using the new techniques we learn and our mentor texts as examples.
I'm really excited and looking forward to the creative expressions of our young poets!
It all began when I received my first library card at age 6. I was hooked. Being surrounded by books has given me the opportunity to experience worlds and meet people I could only dream of. Writing has always afforded me a creative outlet for the movie in my mind's eye. My hope is to throw open these doors for the next generation of writers and bibliophiles.
