This week we start two new units that will take us through to Christmas Break. First, in reading we begin Number the Stars. We'll work on reading elements, such as theme and characterization, but we'll also be flexing our critical literacy muscles by asking questions like who has the power, who is the insider/outsider, and who is telling the story? We'll also spend time exploring and unpacking social justice issues of discrimination, prejudice, and hegemony.
In writing, we'll be beginning our writer workshop narrative unit. We'll be learning strategies to help us create powerful and meaningful stories. We'll brainstorm on how to generate ideas, and then we'll use some tools to construct a handful of great first drafts. Finally, we'll pick a seed draft to focus on and turn into a final narrative that's meaningful to us and engages the reader.
