Chapter 6
Add and Subtract Fractions w/ Unlike Denominators: Fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing an understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions  is considered a "critical area" in 5th grade math standards. There are 4 chapters that handle this critical area beginning with chapter 6. In this chapter, students will visualize equivalent fractions using fraction tiles/strips as a strategy to add and subtract fractions with uncommon denominators.  Students will investigate estimation with number lines and rounding to benchmark fractions. We will observe patterns and problem solving strategies to look for and make use of structure and persevere in solving multi-step problems. Chapter 6 encompasses a brief review of domain specific vocabulary as well as simplifying fractions and finding equivalent fractions.
